Claudia Rippee is a photographer living in Manchester, New Hampshire who works in a variety of photographic mediums. As an avid traveler, many of her photographs are taken in urban settings and are focused on the rhythm of life in the streets and on the multi-layered art applied to urban street canvases. She looks for and seeks out patterns and meaning found on urban walls that have become a random collaboration of unknown authors and by selective framing and cropping creates another layer of meaning.
In addition to her focus on street photography Claudia works with a pinhole camera, the handmade cyanotype process, and makes wet plate tintypes. She taught color photography at the New Hampshire Institute of Art from 2002-2012 and has been a member of the New Hampshire Art Association since 1998. She is a member of the Silver Sunbeam Studio located at the historic Kimball Jenkins Estate in Concord, NH where she focuses on creating wet plate still life images.

On June 3, 2022 from 5:00pm-8:00pm the opening reception for Call and Response will be held at the New Hampshire Art Association, Robert Lincoln Levy Gallery at 136 State Street in Portsmouth, NH. Call and Response is an exhibit deeply rooted in the layering of collaborative efforts between artists Claudia Rippe and Angelique Luro, each responding to the other. Rippee has photographed graffiti from various places around the world for many years, capturing the ideas, composition, color, and style of street artists. The texture, layers, and implied messages captured in these photographs of urban landscapes have been emotionally translated by Luro into abstract canvases layered with color, marks, and collage. This partnership between artists has created a multi faceted exhibition to spur the imagination.
“Call and Response celebrates a newly minted friendship and artistic alliance,” says Rippee and Luro. “We hope these will engage your imagination as you explore the link between each of these pairs of artwork.”
The exhibit will be on display June 2-22 and is free and open to the public during the gallery’s operating hours; Tuesday through Sunday.
